Journal #26 Westroads Mall shooting

At approximately 1:42 p.m. CST, Robert Hawkins opened fire from the customer service area on the third floor of the Von Maur upscale specialty department store in the Westroads Mall, killing eight and wounding five others-- some critically-- before dying of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He fired a total of 20 shots. The Omaha Police found a suicide note stating "I'm going out in style" and "I'm going to be famous." According to an Omaha Police Department spokesperson, nine people, including the gunman, are confirmed dead.
One man, 61, is in critical condition at the University of Nebraska Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the chest; two other victims were treated for minor injuries including a 34-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the arm and a 66-year-old man with facial lacerations. At Creighton Medical Center another individual is in critical condition. On the day of the shooting, a man dressed in camouflage and "hiding under a bus-stop bench outside the mall" was taken into custody by the police. On Friday night of the week before the shooting, authorities removed a live grenade from the parking lot of the same mall.
